Meeting Minutes – August 14, 2017

SAA Student Chapter, St. Catherine University

Meeting was called to order at 6:11pm by Zach Jansen.

Secretary, Treasurer, and SGO Liaison reports

Secretary: New business highlights from the June 26th meeting include the joint SAA/SLA social hour at Bonfire Wood Fire Cooking in Saint Paul; starting up on the MCBA Community Project; setting the St. Kate’s SAA Summer meeting schedule; and discussion of summer goals.

: Current account balance at $264.95, minus receipts from the Historically Accurate Costume Party, which Deb will submit once the semester starts.

SGO Liaison
: Eight student group leaders, along with Heidi Hammond and David Lesniaski, met last Wednesday (minutes here), primarily to discuss fall orientation and division of events among different groups. For orientation, a new process was discussed for streamlining the student group presentations. Developing a common calendar for student group leaders to avoid double-booking events was also discussed. Recruiting new leadership for next year was also an item of discussion as many current leaders will be graduating. Chayse Sundt brought up the need for clarification on expectations of students during accreditation site visits. Trish has reached out to Tony Molaro for details to put in the student newsletter.

The suggestion was made while discussing orientation to frame the minute-long group presentations as “You might be interested in this group if…” as a way of making group introductions more approachable. Molly suggested highlighting one or two groups for students who aren’t sure what their focus (if any) is yet.

Old Business

WARM Journal Digitization Project — Heather

Scanning of the journals has commenced, and Heather is about to do a test upload of the first journal to the site and will be recruiting help. The site has been designed, and there is also a sandbox version of the site that those interested in working on digitization may be able to gain access to.

MCBA Community Project — Heather

A meeting took place on August 1 at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts to meet Amanda Kaler, the new acting director of the project. About seven volunteers attended the meeting. Any individuals who wish to help with the project or continue their involvement will need to meet with Amanda first before doing any work. Heather is also hoping to hand off coordination of the project to someone else.

SLA/SAA Social Hour

The social hour took place on Monday, July 10, at Bonfire Wood Fire in Saint Paul. Turnout was excellent and pictures are posted on the SLA website.

2017 SAA Annual Meeting

The annual national meeting took place in Portland, OR, from July 23 – 29. No students from St. Kate’s were able to attend. The motion was made to table this item for next meeting when Deb Torres is able to attend.

New Business

Fall Orientation

Orientation this year is on Saturday, August 26 starting at 11am. Heather, Trish, Deb, and David are able to attend. See the August 9th SGO meeting minutes for more information.

Fall 2017 Events

September: The tour of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet archives has been confirmed for September 11th, from 5 to 5:30pm, with the meeting to follow.

October: The Archives 101 Panel is slated tentatively for October 9th at 6pm in Whitby 121. Suggestions included: Jill Vuchetich of the Walker Art Center archives; Erik Moore at the University of Minnesota; Jessica Faucher from the General Mills archives; and Shelby Edwards at the Minnesota Historical Society.

  • A tour of the St. Benedict’s archives in Collegeville has been suggested for October, but discussion for this was tabled until the September meeting.
  • Another possibility is the Red Wing Pottery Museum.

November: The TCART Symposium is being held on November 6th at Hennepin County Central Library. The theme of the meeting this year is “back to the basics.” They are looking for presenters; the deadline for submissions is 8/28.

December: A new professionals “brown bag” panel was suggested for the first Saturday in December was suggested, to potentially include alums Jessica Faucher, Stewart Van Cleve, Kate McManus, and Allison Spies. Molly is going to reach out to possible panelists.

  • Movie screening sometime in December after the end of classes. Doing re-screenings of “Desk Set” and “Storm Center” were suggested.

Special election for graduating officers

David and Zach will be graduating in December. Decision was made to announce the position openings in September; make the official call for nominees in October; and hold a special election in November, with training of new officers sometime in December.

Open forum

Trish would like to change the theme of the WordPress website before the start of the fall semester, and showed the group a mock-up of a design. A motion was made to approve Trish’s design. The motion carried, with all but one voting in the affirmative.

  • ePortfolio due for graduating students on October 15
  • ALA External Review Panel on November 6-8 — more details to come from faculty
  • Fall Commencement on Thursday, December 21

Meeting adjourned at 7:23pm. Next meeting scheduled for September 11th at 5:30pm following the tour of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet archives at 5pm.
